Requesting Early Release of Funds

We recognize that some research projects involve preliminary work that doesn't require the use of biological materials. This may include activities such as literature reviews, data analysis, purchasing equipment, or hiring and training staff.

To support these essential startup activities, Principal Investigators may request access to their research funds before their biosafety permit has been formally approved by the Biosafety Committee.

When to Make this Request

This process is intended for research projects where there is a distinct period of work that does not involve any biological materials. If your project requires biological materials from the very beginning, this request is not applicable. By completing this request, you can access your awarded funds to proceed with the non-biosafety-based components of your research while your biosafety permit is being prepared or is under review.

How to Request Early Funding Release
  1. Complete All Fields: Fill out all the required information, including a detailed description of the specific work you will be doing with the funds. Clearly define the time period during which no biosafety work will occur.

  1. Sign the Form: The Principal Investigator must sign the form.
  1. Submit the Form: Send the completed and signed form to Suzanne Richardson, Office of Research Ethics for review and final approval.
Your Commitment

Please be aware that submitting this form is a formal declaration. By signing, the Principal Investigator guarantees that no activities involving biological materials will be initiated until a valid Biosafety Certificate has been issued by the Biosafety Committee.
